Playful Launches a New Way to Make the Apps You Wish Existed

Playful, a new consumer platform that allows individuals to dream up and create apps, launched recently. Just as someone might design a birthday party invitation, curate a playlist, or send recommendations to a friend, Playful makes it possible to create and share something entirely your own in the form of a working app. No coding, technical expertise, or knowledge of AI is required; simply start with an idea and use Playful to see it come to life.

Every family, school group and circle of friends has someone who makes things happen. They plan the reunion, run the class fundraiser and put together the birthday photo book. Starting recently, they can make apps too. Playful opens the experience of creating software to a much broader audience, including people who never imagined they could build an app. Just as earlier shifts in technology put photography, video and design into the hands of more people, Playful sees the potential for software to become a medium of personal expression and everyday problem solving.

“Software doesn’t always have to be serious,” said Mike Harrington, co-founder of Playful. “It can solve a tiny problem, help plan a family trip, make your friends laugh or just be something weird you wanted to exist. We believe making software should feel creative, personal, and most importantly, fun.”

Playful calls these personal creations “homemade software,” apps made around personal interests, individual needs and ideas that don’t have to appeal to everyone to be worth creating. They might be made for a book club, a family trip, a school fundraiser or simply because someone wishes they existed.

“We are entering a new era of personal software,” said Darrin Massena, co-founder of Playful. “For decades, the economics of software meant an app had to serve a large enough market to justify building it. That has left an enormous gap between what software companies develop and the ways people might want to use it in their own lives. The technology to fill that void is finally here. Software can now be created around the needs of an individual, for one person, one need or one moment.”

From idea to working app

Playful is designed to make the creative process approachable from the very beginning. Rather than requiring users to know how to code, write detailed prompts or navigate complex development tools, Playful starts by asking a few questions about what they want to make. It then creates a plan for their approval before building a working app they can use immediately, with no code to download or separate hosting to manage.

From there, people can continue shaping their apps simply by asking for changes, whether adding a feature, changing how something works or personalizing the colors, fonts, photos and layout. Playful takes care of hosting, so apps are ready to use and easy to share through a simple link.

Apps can remain private, be shared with specific people or published for others to discover and use. They can also be installed on a phone, allowing something created in Playful to become part of everyday life. Some apps are designed for individual use, while others invite multiple people to use the same app, contribute to it and interact in real time.

Beyond creating apps from scratch, Playful also offers inspiration through HOMEMADE, a curated destination featuring apps, ideas and creations from the Playful community. People can explore what others are making, discover new ideas and remix existing apps to make them their own. While designed to make app creation approachable for newcomers, Playful also gives experienced creators a place to experiment, discover new ideas and make something simply for the fun of it.

Built by the creators of Valve and Picnik

Harrington and Massena have a rare track record: software that earns devoted fans who are still talking about it decades later. They first worked together at Microsoft in the early days of personal computing. Harrington went on to co-found Valve in 1996, where he helped create the groundbreaking video game Half-Life. The two later co-founded Picnik, the online photo editor acquired by Google in 2010, which brought approachable photo editing to millions of people.

With Playful, they’re bringing that same commitment to intuitive, enjoyable consumer experiences to a new generation of software creation.

Playful is available beginning today at Playful.app through a browser on desktop and mobile devices. Anyone can try Playful for free, with no credit card required, and make a few apps to use and share. Apps created during the free trial remain available for 30 days. Playful offers a USD 10 monthly membership for people who want to continue making, refining, and using their apps, with a monthly allowance that resets each month. Apps remain available while membership is active, and recipients never pay to use shared apps.
