A2RL unveils new self-driving racing car in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), an important body of ASPIRE, has unveiled its heavily modified self-driving Super Formula SF23 for the first time. The car’s grand unveiling was also attended by world-renowned journalists representing the world’s most prestigious automotive and racing publications, further underlining the car’s position as a leader in the motorsport industry.

In April 2024, 10 teams from North America, Europe, the United Arab Emirates and Asia will compete for prizes worth US$2.25 million.

This car series aims to accelerate the development and innovation of autonomous driving, promote technological development, and ultimately be used to improve the safety of cars on the road.

The new series makes full use of the Super Formula SF23 racing car developed by motorsport giant Dalarra, which is far-sighted and lightning fast. All cars will be equipped with a range of sensors and control units as well as base-level autonomous driving capabilities.

The self-driving car unveiled today has just successfully completed a week of track testing. Attendees learned how A2RL’s extensive test program is initially refining the basic SF23 platform, including validating a range of sensors, control modules and automation control software. Once validated, the base platform will be made available to the 10 teams participating in the inaugural A2RL race at Yas Marina Circuit on April 28, 2024.

His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, the governing body of ASPIRE, said: “It is an exciting opportunity to be able to use extreme sports to advance technology. The investment in A2RL will help establish the Autonomous transportation ecosystem, demonstrating safe deployment and encouraging OEMs to invest for widespread adoption, ultimately improving road safety.”
