Outdoor specialty retailer REI Co-op introduced its new spring backpacking line designed to help people explore our nation’s trails and spend memorable nights under the stars. From essential gear like the redesigned Half Dome tent to an innovative modular bear canister, new Traverse backpacks with full-feature comfort, and XeroCloud three-layer waterproof, breathable, stretch outerwear, REI Co-op’s spring product lineup is built for the trail. To support the fight to protect public lands and those who work tirelessly to ensure access to natural spaces, the co-op will donate 20% of Half Dome tent sale proceeds from March 25 through April 30 to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Backpacking America’s national parks and public lands has long been a much-loved activity by REI members from coast to coast. With the future of the national parks currently under threat, REI is teaming with the National Parks Conservation Association to donate 20% of proceeds from its iconic Half Dome backpacking tent sales to the nonprofit. Since 1919, the nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association has been the leading voice in safeguarding national parks for present and future generations. REI’s donation complements the co-op’s commitment to never stop defending public lands through partnerships, advocacy, and REI Cooperative Action Network resources available to everyone.

“Now more than ever, the nation’s public lands have a dire and uncertain future. We are honored to support the forward-thinking and inclusive approaches of the National Parks Conservation Association and further visibility of their important work,” says Isabelle Portilla, vice president of REI Co-op brands.

“Just as our national parks are experiencing record-breaking visitation, they are enduring the most harmful attacks we’ve ever seen,” said Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association. “National Parks Conservation Association was created more than a century ago for moments exactly like this. Our founder said it is the people who must save their national parks. REI is a fierce defender of our public lands and working together alongside the millions of people across the country who also love their national parks, that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

REI Co-op’s spring backpacking gear and apparel – Built for the trail, member informed

The co-op’s spring backpacking line prioritizes comfort, thoughtful innovation, smart design and sustainable materials to help people level up their experience in the backcountry.

“This year is particularly significant as we are celebrating 45 years of our iconic REI Co-op Half Dome tent, which is our #1 selling tent. The customer favorite has long been an industry disruptor due to its roomy design and approachable price point,” adds Portilla. “Across our spring line, we leveraged years of feedback from our members to deliver on backpackers’ needs for durable, quality gear and apparel to support their memorable experiences outside.”

To commemorate the Half Dome tent’s milestone, an updated design of the three-season backpacking tent is now available in a two-person, a 2-person plus and a 3-person version. Enhancements include improved living space volume for comfort, better protection from the elements, and a new HubCheck hub system to improve ease of setup and overall functionality.

A limited-edition anniversary commemorative Half Dome collection of gear and apparel featuring the co-op’s historical logo joins the tent lineup. In addition to a special edition tent, an anorak, pants, and guide hat designed with tent-like materials are now available to REI customers to help celebrate the milestone.

With market-leading backpacking experience, the co-op released the innovative REI Co-op Traverse Bear Canister, one of the world’s first modular, transparent food storage solutions that allows backpackers to configure for overnight or multi-day trips. The canister is designed with a unique two-step closure system that kept the bears at Washington State University’s bear testing center baffled and hungry. It resulted in full certification from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. Finally, its unique carry bag gives backpackers the flexibility to attach the container to the inside or outside of a pack.

REI Co-op also updated its 60-liter Traverse backpacks for men and women. These packs prioritize fit, comfort, and convenience for people of all sizes. The thoughtfully designed pack includes everything a hiker needs for overnight or multi-day adventures and is made with Bluesign-approved recycled materials. Key features include an upgraded and ventilated air-mesh back panel for sustained airflow, a new front zipper for easier access to gear, a built-in rain cover, an improved top-lid daypack for short trips, and pockets for organization. The design is also available in a versatile and technical 35-liter version. Customers can visit their local REI store to learn torso measurements and get an individualized pack fit.

To complement the premium Magma down sleeping bag series that was launched in 2024, the co-op introduced the REI Co-op Radiant 20 sleeping bag. Available in nine different sizes to help customers find their best fit, the backpacking sleeping bag features 600-fill-power-down and strategically placed synthetic insulation to provide extra protection against dampness from tent walls, zonal insulation for warmth, and ample space for various body shapes and sleep preferences.
